The 4th seal...
7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

If we continue to follow the timeline we were given in the letters to the seven churches, we would now be in the timelines between 750 to 1100AD. Welcome to the times of the feudalistic societies, where the church and the kings owned all the land, who then leased it to the barons, who then leased it to the knights, who then forced the people or ‘serfs’ to do the bidding of all of the above…
Three primary elements characterized feudalism: lords, vassals, and fiefs; the structure of feudalism can be seen in how these three elements fit together. A lord was a noble who owned land, a vassal was a person who was granted possession of the land by the lord, and the land was known as a fief. In exchange for the fief, the vassal would provide military service to the lord. The obligations and relations between lord, vassal and fief form the basis of feudalism Wikipedia
These were the times after the decline of the Roman empire, when practically the whole world was in turmoil, but especially Europe. Corruption and greed were running rampant, and the catholic system was the glue that bound the whole thing together, and the common person suffered the consequences of this very fact. Everyone was at war with everyone else for power, land rites, greed etc…
But this is but a small part of the tumultuious history mankind had to endure during these times. For the Roman catholic system was now fullt in place, and wherever they have ruled...you can rest assured much blood will flow.

Welcome to the crusades...
The Crusades were a series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns waged by much of Roman Catholic Europe, particularly the Franks of France and the Holy Roman Empire. The specific crusades to restore Christian control of the Holy Land were fought over a period of nearly 200 years, between 1095 and 1291. Other campaigns in Spain and Eastern Europe continued into the 15th century. The Crusades were fought mainly by Roman Catholic forces (taking place after the East-West Schism and mostly before the Protestant Reformation) against Muslims who had occupied the near east since the time of the Rashidun Caliphate, although campaigns were also waged against pagan Slavs, pagan Balts, Jews, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, Waldensians, Old Prussians, and political enemies of the various popes. Orthodox Christians also took part in fighting against Islamic forces in some Crusades. Crusaders took vows and were granted penance for past sins, often called an indulgence. Wikipedia
These times were known as the middle ages, and if you know history, it was a very hard time to live. The 4th seal and the 'pale horse' again, fit perfect according to history.
For further study I would recommend anything written by Susan Reynolds or Elizabeth A. R. Brown on the topic. Seeing how the catholic system was in full control at this time in European history, it can be difficult to find a truthful description of exactly how tumultuous these times were. But from what Ive read, these two women tell the tale quite honestly, and quite clearly.
